Fats Waller's great tune, "Stealing Apples", was a highlight of Will and Pam Wilson's 40th wedding anniversary celebration at Niagara-on-the-lake on Saturday evening, June 27th. Will, who played with Jack for well over a decade in the Rainbow Gardens Jazz Orchestra, led a quartet that included himself on guitar, Jack on piano, Brian Bauer on clarinet and saxes, plus Ed Brown on string bass.
Fats would have enjoyed this joyful marriage of stride piano and solid rhythm.
It's what he delighted in calling "effervescence".
Jack was having so much fun that he carried on after Brian thought he had ended the tune. Fats would probably have gone for at least three more choruses. Maybe even to dawn!
