Navigation in the hills isn’t just about maps and compasses. It’s about judgement.
In this video I explore something that many navigation courses barely touch on: the subtle psychological side of land navigation. The part that happens between bearings — when we’re tired, cold, under pressure, and making dozens of tiny decisions every hour.
To illustrate the scale of the problem, we start with a simple visualisation: 80 walkers on the screen. They aren’t real people — they’re AI-generated images used to represent a real statistic. In a study of mountain rescue incidents in the Scottish Highlands, around 18% of mountain deaths involved a navigation error somewhere in the chain of events.
Across the UK, roughly 10 deaths each year involve a navigational mistake — not necessarily as the official cause of death, but as a critical step that placed someone in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Many of these people were experienced walkers who knew how to use maps and compasses.
So if people who can navigate still get lost… what’s really going on?
In this video we look at:
• Why most navigation errors come from just three common mistakes
• How cognitive load affects decision-making in the hills
• The role of confirmation bias and mental shortcuts (heuristics)
• Why getting lost usually happens through tiny micro-decisions rather than dramatic mistakes
• How experienced navigators deliberately delay commitment and test assumptions
• Practical habits that help prevent small navigation errors turning into serious incidents
This isn’t a technical lesson about how to take a bearing. It’s about how the human brain behaves while navigating — and why even skilled walkers can make mistakes.
If you spend time walking, trekking, or mountaineering in the hills, understanding these subtle factors can make a real difference.
Because good navigation isn’t about proving you’re right.
It’s about remaining correctable.
