Thousands of people walk past this every year — without stopping… without even noticing.
On the eastern slope of Knowe Fell, looking down over Malham Tarn, there’s something that, to me, is far more than “interesting.” I won’t tell you what word to use — fascinating, extraordinary, incredible… or maybe just dull. You can decide.
Because this isn’t just a lake.
It’s a geological accident 300 million years in the making.
In this video we walk from the slopes above the Tarn down to its shoreline, and then on to Water Sinks, where something quietly astonishing happens:
There is a river.
Then there is no river.
And the exact reason why lies in:
• The North Craven Fault
• Ancient tropical seas south of the equator
• The collision of continents like Laurentia, Baltica, and Gondwana
• The formation of Pangaea
• Ice Age glaciers acting like giant sheets of sandpaper
• And a hidden slab of ancient waterproof rock beneath your feet
Malham Tarn shouldn’t really exist.
Limestone landscapes swallow water. Lakes and limestone don’t usually mix.
And yet — here it is.
Then, just 50 metres away, the water reaches limestone again… finds the cracks… and simply vanishes.
Not gradually.
Not somewhere vague.
But at one exact line in the landscape — a line drawn hundreds of millions of years ago.
To me, this is one of the most wondrous places in Britain.
But you may disagree — and that’s the point.
