There are a few reason you may want to start plants from seed. The first and most obvious is economical. You can buy fifty seeds for the same price as a couple of small plants.
The second reason is as simple as satisfaction. Growing an entire garden crop from seed is a very rewarding experience.
The third and most popular reason for starting from seed is the ability to keep heirloom varieties year after year. Starting this years crop from last years seed allows you to keep that good crop going.
List of Materials Needed
- cell packs
- potting soil
- seeds
- clear cover for cell packs (if they don’t come with one)
List of Tools Needed
- small trowel or scoop
- watering can
STEP 1
Fill the cells, of the cell pack, with good potting soil.
STEP 2
Place one seed in each cell. If you get a couple in there, don’t worry. You can always remove the weaker, smaller plants; after the plants begin to grow. Next, softly push the seeds into the soil.
STEP 3
Water the seeds until water runs out the bottom of the cell pack. Place the cell pack tray in a warm location with plenty of light. A hot bed, or cold frame as it is sometimes called, works well to keep the seeds warm outside. Inside, the top of the refrigerator is a good spot.
Be sure to read the label on your seeds. Different seeds will have different time frames for germination and growth. These time frames will determine when you need to start you seeds.
