Often, we say that you need to use the right tool for the job. It's especially true with hammers. Did you know there are dozens of different hammer designs, all created for specific purposes? In our segment on hammers, Al demonstrated several different models. The anti-vibration hammer design Al selected for the segment is manufactured by Stanley Tools. There are other makers of fine hammers, but Stanley is one of the most popular.
Stanley offers the following tool tips for hammers:
• Never strike one hammer with another.
• Take the time to aim true and hit square, avoiding over and under strikes and glancing blows.
• Make sure, when striking a punch, wedge or chisel, that your hammer face has a diameter at least 3 1/8" larger than the struck end of the tool being used.
• Be sure that your hammer is the right size and weight.
• Never use a hammer with a loose or otherwise damaged head (the same goes for any tool you strike with the hammer).
• If your striking or struck tools show signs of cracks, chips or dents, dispose of them immediately.
• Never repair a hammer by grinding, welding or heat-treating.
• Always wear safety goggles when hammering.
Use a paper clip or a slit in a business card to hold a small nail for you when you hammer it to get it started in the wood. This minimizes your chances of hitting your thumb and forefinger with your hammer.
Use a small piece of wood as a wedge under the claw head of your hammer to give you extra leverage for pulling out stubborn, bent nails.
