Most of the time, birds are a welcome addition to our yards and landscape, however they can be pests when it comes to vegetable gardens. Here are a few simple tips on repelling birds from your garden.
List of Materials Needed
- PVC pipe
- PVR double T adapter
- PVC toilet flange
- PVC cement
- 12” dia. Toy rubber ball
- Rubber toy Snake
- Mylar ribbon
- Inflatable “Terror Eye”
- Heavy duty string or 12 lb. Mono filament fishing line.
- 3 foot length of 1/4” Re-bar
List of Tools Needed
- Hacksaw
- Hammer
- Knife or scissors
- Electric drill
- Black Magic Marker
STEP 1
Artificial predators. A simple Rubber Snake works wonders when it comes to repelling birds. For instance, tying a Rubber Snake to a tomato stake or laying the snake in the top of the plant will do the job.
STEP 2
Scarecrow. You can build an old fashioned Scarecrow using a 12’ length of 1/2” PVC pipe and a couple of PVC fittings. With a hacksaw, cut 4 feet off of the pipe. Next, cut the four foot section in half. With PVC cement, glue the three pieces together using a “Double T” adapter.
You now have a “T” shape that makes up the body and arms of the Scarecrow. A PVC “Toilet Flange” will be used to join the head to the body. In this case, the head is a 12” dia. Red Rubber Ball. Drill 4 holes in the collar of the flange, then apply an all purpose cement to the Rubber Ball and press it down onto the flange. The 4 holes in the collar of the Flange will allow you to tie the Ball onto the Flange so it will stay secure while the glue dries. Draw 4 big, scary eyes, one on each side of the Ball. Next, using an old, white Tee shirt, dress your Scarecrow then attach the head to the body using PVC Cement. Mylar ribbon, or strips of pillowcase can be tied at the hands to add flash and movement. Drive your section of Re-bar into the ground and slide the Scarecrow down into place. Your Scarecrow can be easily moved about the garden so birds don’t get used to it.
STEP 3
Terror Eye. A “Terror Eye” is an inflatable ball available at lawn and garden stores. This big yellow ball is decorated with big, scary eyes and apparently scares the seeds out of most birds!
Simply inflate and then suspend the ball from heavy duty string or fishing line by tying the line from stake to stake through the garden.
Another option is a disposable pie plate. Basically, anything that produces flash, movement and noise does the trick…use your imagination!
