Moles are very interesting and very illusive creatures. However, there are a number if myths about moles and about controlling them. Getting to know the mole is the first step to getting rid of it.
Moles:
- consist of about 30 species worldwide- seven in North America. All species construct two types of tunnels- deep, permanent tunnels and shallow surface runs.
- prefer moist, loamy soils.
- are insectivores- their diet consists of earthworms, insects and other invertebrates. However, some species of moles have been known to eat mice and frogs.
- live most of their life beneath the ground.
- have pin-sized eyes, often covered with skin, and do not see well.
- have no external ears, but have very good hearing.
- are solitary creatures (even though it looks like there are hundreds).
- can eat more than their own weight- daily!
- are not known for eating bulbs, roots, and other vegetation.
- are active throughout the year.
- may only use surface runs once.
- can tunnel at a rate of 12 to 15 feet per hour.
- provide several benefits to your yard:
1) soil mixing
2) aeration of the soil
3) control of destructive insects
4) allow water to reach the deeper roots of plants
In some states the use of certain mole traps is illegal.
A humane alternative to a mole trap is to make your yard “unattractive” to moles. The preventative method is to keep grubs out of your yard through organic pesticides. This will reduce the food supply available. Also, grubs are the offspring of beetles. Turning off your outdoor lights at night, will cut down the beetle population in your yard.
Second, you can spray your yard with a castor oil based solution which will make the soil repugnant to the moles. There are several solutions on the market which can be mixed in your hose-end sprayer.
