Whilst running at high warp to aid an Earth colony in distress, the Enterprise is halted by a visit from Q. Boasting an irreverence for Captain Picard's motivation to complete his rescue mission, Q insists that mission take second place to a mission of his own; to explore how Commander Riker will behave once he has been given the power of the Q.
Q presents to Riker the specifics behind the Q's interest in humanity. We learn that despite their great power, their apparent awareness of the "true" nature of the universe, there does exist dimensions to human behaviour worthy of their study. For a brief minute Q actually appears pretty genuine in his interest.
