Episode: "The Big Goodbye"

Needing a break from his preparations to deliver an official greeting to a race known as the Jarada, Captain Picard tries out a recent upgrade applied to the holodeck in which he'll get to assume the role of the private detective Dixon Hill, a charcater that he's been a fan of since childhood. Although Picard's experiences in the game start off relatively playfull, the safety of the fantasy turns decidely more dangerous after the Enterprise is intercepted by a long-range probe sent by the Jarada, damaging the holodeck circuitry, locking the players in and more crucially disabling the simulator's safety protocols; getting hurt has become decidedly more real.

Picard's first visit to the holodeck; we get to join in on his elation as he explores this ultra realistic reproduction of a fantasy world that up to this point had only existed inside the pages of his books. I'm amused by Picard's excitement as I would no doubt react the same if I were to use the holodeck to run a simulation of say... Star Trek: The Next Generation!

$Star Trek TNG Resorting to Execution to Silence Dissenting Voices Season 1 Episode 14 Episode: Angel One After having discovered the wreckage of the Federation freighter Odin, it is discovered that the ships crew probably escaped the catastrophe as a number of escape pods were indeed missing; their most likely destination being planet Angel One. The social and political hierarchy on Angel One is predominatly female-oriented. Typically the women on this planet are physically larger, stronger and domineering, which has done much to cultivate a society that has relegated the men to being relatively demure and submissive. The planets governing body, hosted by no less than six elected mistresses, hosted by Mistress Beata (referred to as The Elected One), are less than enthusisatic at the Enterprises arrival but do at least prepare an icy welcome for Commander Rikers away team. After a little hesitancy, Beata admits to being aware of the presence of survivors from the freighter Odin, still led by the freighters former captain, Ramsey; their official status on Angel One however has been escalated to that of fugitives. The government has deemed that Ramsey and his followers are disruptive, dangerous and even anarchic; as a result theyve been in hiding ever since. Beata agrees to support Rikers team with whatever resources are necessary to locate the survivors of the Odin so long as once found theyll be ejected from the planet, never to return. After having decided that Ramsey and his followers refusal to leave planet Angel One has earned them all the death penalty, Riker presents a case to Mistress Beata in an attempt to turn around her judgement. Despite Beata agreeing to rescind the order of exection subject to Riker convincing Ramsey to leave the planet, Ramsey insists that he and his group are staying (the dope!). Beatas judgement stands. I know I keep revisiting this sort of thing: Execution. Its because despite me having lived on this planet a long long time, I still struggle to think up a meaningful list infractions that would justify the need for such severe punishment. If you appreciate that you seldom get effect without cause and sometimes those effects include the extremes of human behaviour, you really need to root out what the hell the cause is. - Extremes of behaviour arent programmed at birth; they are learned and for that which is not nurtured, its probably the result of brain dysfunction in which case we must course correct the action from punishment to treatment. Tough to swallow for a justice system that likes its revenge, I know.$
