Episode: "Elementary, Dear Data"
Commander Data and Geordi LaForge visit the holodeck to play through a Sherlock Holmes mystery. It quickly becomes apparent that so long as Data has every Sherlock Holmes story memorised, there really can be no mystery, which as far as Geordi is concerned guts the whole point of the game. After a little discussion with Doctor Pulaski, Geordi places a challenge on the holodeck computer to create a Sherlock Holmes type mystery in which there is an adversary capable of defeating Data; the holodeck comes up with a great deal more that either of them bargained for.
Enter Professor Moriarity, the most famous adversary to face Sherlock Holmes and the template on which the holodeck has based an ultimate foe capable of defeating Data. The holodeck basically provided this 19th century character with access to the Enterprise's computer and a level of self-awareness to appreciate that he is a holographic character. Despite still possessing biases towards the character from which he is based upon, this Moriarity is far more motivated by his long-term survival than simply defeating Data at his game.
