Episode: "Symbiosis"
The Enterprise's mission to observe the flare activity of a star is interrupted by a distress call from a freighter in danger of destruction from a decaying orbit. Interference from the local star's radiation complicates the rescue operation resulting in the freighter's destruction however several of the passengers are at least rescued; them and their cargo. We learn that the cargo is in fact medicine, containing over 4-billion doses of a drug called felicium, manufactured by a race called the Brekkians. For generations a race on a neighbouring planet, the Ornarans have been struck down by a planet-wide plague. Having discovered long ago that felicium can address their symptoms, the Ornarans have maintained a long running trade agreement with the Brekkians for regular deliveries of the drug.
The morality knot: The Brekkians are exploiting the Onrarans; generations of willfully misleading the population of Ornara in to believing that felicium is a medicine that prevents them all dying from a lethal plague when in fact the drug is actually a narcotic. Our heroes have discovered this deception leaving Captain Picard with a difficult choice: To either let the Ornarans know that they've been had by their business associates who have been profiting on the back of their prolonged suffering; or to simply sit on the revelation, keep quiet and not upset the symbiotic relationship that exists between these two worlds. - The Prime Directive is watching.
