Twenty years late, but FIIIINALLY Nintendo's released Star Fox 2 on the SNES Classic today, so to honor the occasion I decided to make a cover of the main theme for this amazing game!
I've actually wanted to make this cover for a while now (even before Star Fox 2 was revealed to be on SNES Classic) but today's release just gave me extra incentive to make this as musically epic as possible :P Hope you enjoy!

Wouldnt be another year of DS Music without some sorta Final Fantasy XIII music thrown into the playlist just a few weeks after another Final Fantasy cover, right? As youll hear from me now and for many years to come, I can just never get enough of composer Masashi Hamauzus music and this track is no exception.
I actually originally transcribed and arranged this track for the GameGrooves Quickfire Cover Contest last month which was based on making a Final Fantasy piano cover. Since Ive done a ton of Piano Collections pieces in the past before, I wanted to challenge myself and cover a more unconventional song that didnt already have sheet music for it already. This track The Hanging Edge plays in the first chapter of the game and then a appears briefly later, but man is it a way to hook you in. Plinky, off-putting piano lines followed by enormous orchestra and ominous synths along with a killer violin solo give it sort of a Hans Zimmer vibe while still being uniquely Hamauzu. I also decided to pick this song since I FINALLY ACTUALLY STARTED PLAYING THE GAME (can you believe it? I actually played the game of a song Im covering? Shocking). While the gameplay of Chapter 1 can be super tedious and linear and boring, the music actually conveys this feeling quite well while also building tension and drama.

Hope youre decently surprised by this BONUS ROUND piano cover! With a new Godzilla movie right around the corner, nows the perfect time for me to pay homage to everyones favorite big ol lizard kaiju (we are Team Godzilla in this household). Funny enough, I didnt start getting into the Godzilla series until about last month. However, once I get started on a new interest, I go wayyy too deep. Ive watched the classic 1954 Godzilla, Godzilla 2000, all the new Monsterverse Movies, and Shin Godzilla (you know I gotta cover Who Will Know soon cuz gosh Shiro Sagisu is a legendary composer) along with delving into the comics and even maybe kinda sorta splurging too much money on an Evangelion x Godzilla model of Mechagodzilla/Kiryu painted like Eva Unit-01 I mean uhhh funny nuclear lizard go brrr....
Akira Ifukubes score to the original movie is an iconic masterpiece and Bear McCreary did an amazing job paying homage to it while adding his own spice with the roaring choir chants in the track. I tried to capture some of that same vibe by adding accents and chords within the left hand line that mimicked the choir chants, and I may have chanted along while performing the piece haha (its literally impossible to not say GO-JI-RA for the last three notes I swear).
Anyways, hope yall enjoy this little movie soundtrack tangent. I know I just posted an anime cover like last week but I swear Ill get back to video game music. If you do want to see me cover more soundtracks from shows or movies or anime, do let me know though in the comments!

Lets try something different... -Virtual Riot
Its been a while since I did my last dubstep piano cover (with the rendition of Voltage by Skrillex being the last one), so I thought it was time to bring up another dubstep tribute, and this one is for another of my favorite producers of all time: Virtual Riot.
Always pushing the scene with his ridiculous wubz and gorgeous melodies, hes also helped push the dubstep fanbase with his iconic/infamous preset packs and fun livestreams where he shows the process behind his production. Overall, hes just a really fun guy and a great all-around musician.
I was first introduced to VR from his Make a Dubstep Drop in 10 Minutes challenge vid, and then I watched his livestream for making this song, Lunar. Watching him make growl basses from percussion sounds was epic in itself, but also watching him improv on the piano was beautiful. I also still remember the exact time I first listened to the second drop of this song (walking home from school on a crisp autumn afternoon) and thinking this is perfect.
So in order to show my appreciation to Virtual Riot for getting me into the melodic dubstep/future bass/riddim scene, heres a cover of the iconic piano part to Lunar 💗 (with a little bit of With You, Friends (Long Drive) thrown in at the end cuz we all know thats VRs favorite piano lick :P)

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 just released in Japan! To celebrate Neon Genesis Evangelion finally reaching its epic conclusion, I wanted to take a look back at the beginning with one of the first tracks heard in the soundtrack, Rei I from the original NGE anime series.

Weeb pianist jokes aside, the story of how I got to posting this today is actually a pretty interesting one. Back in like December when winter break was starting, one of my friends got me into watching Neon Genesis Evangelion with a couple other Eva newbies. Long story short, I really really liked the story, world-building, art-direction, and especially the characters and themes (for those of you wondering whos my favorite waifu, were Kaworu stans in this household 😤). However, one of the things that really stuck with me as a musician was the soundtrack. Shiro Sagisu has this very poignant style that intricately and masterfully weaves between being upbeat/jazzy/smooth and then contrasting with very humanistic/touching songs. One of those tracks that I especially liked was this track that plays in a mysterious moment in the first episode, and the pops up here and there throughout the series until it makes one last ominous return at the end of End of Evangelion. The way it evolves throughout the series just colors the mystery of Evas premise so well, even with a such a seemingly simple and repetitive chord progression.
Watching Eva has also been getting me into more Hideaki Anno related things along with other classic staples of Japanese media such as Godzilla and maybe Gundam one day. Not saying that Im gonna become an anime pianist... but it is tempting 🤔
So while we wait for months to finally get the last Evangelion Rebuild movie released to us filthy casual Americans (or until a cam rip of the movie pops up...), I hope you enjoy this haunting and chilling piano theme that I feel goes a bit under-appreciated in the Evangelion OST! Ill be back with more video game music next week, so stay tuned.

So this has been an idea thats been a while in the making...
I havent done a classical music montage ever since the Great Fairy Fountain x Fantasie Impromptu (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time x Chopin) years ago, so I thought Year 6 would be a great time to bust out some new classical piano etude mashups! Ive loved the Portal 2 OST to death since middle school, but figuring out a song to play on piano from its exhaustive electronic soundtrack is hard. Halls of Science 4 is a simple enough yet semi-iconic tune from the multiplayer campaign of the game, but I wanted to give it a bit more pizzazz in some way since it would be pretty boring if I just played it as is.
Suddenly one day, I had the realization that one of the arpeggios in the song had the same notes as the first run in Chopins famous Black Keys Etude (Op. 10 No. 5) and BAM that got the creative juices flowing. While this isnt exactly a perfect amalgamation of the two sources, I took the main notes and chords from Halls of Science 4 and tried to give them the hyped up energy of Black Keys Etude to the best of my ability (and play as many black keys as possible :P).
So I hope you enjoy this classical/modern music experiment! If you like it, I got some more complex and difficult ideas in mind that I might be able to try out 👀 Also let me know if yall like the Saturday uploads or if you want it to go back to Friday afternoon, Im kind of experimenting with scheduling too now.

So heres something new and experimental for the channel! In case yall havent seen me yap about it already, I stream some games for fun on Twitch in order to interact with yall in chat. Recently my friend NC Cymphonies and I have been doing a series where we try to learn Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle, and so I compiled some of the best moments and did (too much) editing on it to make this highlight reel. Whos hyped for Secret of Mana remastered? :D
...nobody? Oh, okay...
So basically I was asked to make a remix for an album on the VGM remix site OCRemix, and so I decided to pick the minimalist tunes Steel and Snare and Dead of the Night.
My overall goal for this track was to make something new and refreshing, because in general when Ive looked around OCR for EDM, everything Ive found has been either ambient, experimental, or just old (as in pre-2010 era). Since doing modern dubstep wouldnt work (since who has time to fit a melody in dubstep?), I decided to go with something more melodic and modern with a future bass track in the style of Virtual Riot, one of my favorite all-around electronic producers. With a hint of Flume and a few wubz thrown in, I hope that this track will give off the chill, natural vibes that Secret of Mana is known for.
