Sorry if you’ve already watched this video on the other channel. I keep making the mistake of posting content over there that only a small number of very experienced fire makers would appreciate and want to watch.
1) Although the spindle and Fireboard came from the same Oak branch, the Fireboard was very punky while the spindle was very hard. I switched to a much harder Tulip Poplar Fireboard for some very good success.
2) An ember that won’t coalesce usually breaks up completely when you put it in a tinder bundle. Thereby making it much harder to get the flames. For such embers, it’s a good idea to ignite some punkwood for insurance before trying to get the flames.
3) You may think the Standing Bow Drill is just a frivolous backyard cheat, but it is a great technique to know. You can use it on a fallen tree or outcropping of rocks. If you're with a partner they can hold the fireboard, or it can be pinned with a knife, a heavy object could hold it down, etc.
