MATTHEW STAFFORD GAME WINNING TD WITH BROKEN SHOULDER 🤯
On November 22, 2009, rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford cemented his legacy for toughness in a thrilling 38-37 victory over the Cleveland Browns. Though often remembered as a "broken shoulder," Stafford actually suffered a severe separated/dislocated left shoulder. With only eight seconds left in the game and the Detroit Lions trailing 37-31, Stafford threw a desperation Hail Mary pass into the end zone. As he threw, Cleveland defensive tackle C.J. Mosley delivered a massive, crushing hit that drove Stafford directly into the turf, popping out his non-throwing shoulder.
The pass was intercepted, but a defensive pass interference penalty was called against the Browns, giving Detroit one final untimed down from the 1-yard line. While Stafford was screaming in agony on the sideline being tended to by medical staff, the Browns called a timeout. Hearing the loudspeaker announce the timeout, Stafford realized he had a window to get back in. He shrugged off the team trainers, famously telling coaches and teammates on his mic'd up wire, "I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball!"
Fighting through severe pain, Stafford walked back onto the field for the singular untimed play, took the snap, and fired a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brandon Pettigrew to tie the game. Kick specialist Jason Hanson drilled the extra point to win the game with no time remaining. Stafford finished that legendary game with 422 passing yards and 5 touchdowns, breaking the single-game rookie passing touchdown record at the time and instantly winning over the city of Detroit.
