Security officers at St. Joseph’s Health will soon have expanded authority to respond to dangerous situations at the hospital as officials address a rise in violence against healthcare workers.
A new state law signed July 24 by Gov. Kathy Hochul grants peace officer status to qualified security officers at St. Joseph’s Health Hospital in Syracuse, North Medical Center in North Syracuse and Northeast Medical Center in Fayetteville.
The legislation allows qualified officers to intervene in situations that previously may have required a response from local law enforcement.
