Several Texas churches host annual autumn bazaars, from St. Boniface in Olfen to St. Ambrose in Wall. But according to this 1973 news segment for San Angelo's KLST-TV, the one at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rowena is "the granddaddy of all of the fall festivals." The Rowena Fall Festival began in 1922 as a way to honor World War I veterans and celebrate another successful harvest. Its popular sausage dinners—the 1973 event prepared 4,000 pounds of German sausage, 123 turkeys, 700 pounds of dressing, and 500 pounds of cabbage for coleslaw—also recognize the area's German and Czech heritage.
