Homecoming football games are a Texas tradition dating back to the early 1900s, but this 1970s home movie of Timpson High School captures one of the more striking rituals: mums. Wearing fresh or silk chrysanthemums is a common homecoming custom across the American South—the first known appearance was at the University of Missouri—but only Texas turned the festive corsage into an extravagantly decorated adornment with attached trinkets and trailing ribbons. While mums still make the occasional appearance at collegiate events, they are primarily a high school staple.
