St Florence Village Walk – A Timeless Wander Through Rural Pembrokeshire
A peaceful walk through St Florence, one of Pembrokeshire’s prettiest and most characterful villages. Tucked inland from the popular coastal resorts, it’s a place where stone cottages, flower-filled lanes, and slow village rhythms define the day. The soft ring of church bells, the trickle of the River Ritec, and the scent of woodsmoke in the air make it feel like a step back into a simpler, slower Wales.
🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore
St Florence dates back to medieval times and is named after a 6th-century saint said to have travelled from Ireland. Its heart is the 15th-century church of St Florence, a lovely old church with a crooked tower and lichen-covered gravestones. Around it, narrow lanes twist between honey-coloured cottages built from local limestone, their gardens spilling with roses and hollyhocks in summer.
Once a tidal inlet reaching all the way from Tenby, the River Ritec now winds gently through the valley floor, giving the village its lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere. The walk meanders beside it, past old stone bridges and ivy-clad walls, before looping through open countryside dotted with farmhouses and fields edged in hedgerows.
You’ll also find traces of the past here: stories of smugglers who once used the waterways, and echoes of the Flemish settlers who gave this part of Pembrokeshire its distinct architectural charm. Despite its deep roots, St Florence feels timeless rather than old — a rare place where the pace of life still moves to the rhythm of the seasons.
