Abstract: Following some of the points raised by Prof. Kevin Anderson in his last seminar, regarding the bias in the IPCC's Scenarios, we need to go further on how the IPCC works its mission, how the authors are selected, and how the literature review is done, and finally how the Summary for Policy Makers is approved. So when talking about the present climatic crisis, we need to talk about the responsibilities of the higher emitters of GHG (individuals, oil companies and governments from the Global North), but also about gender inequities when doing science, lack of funding for authors of the Global South to publish in the top tier scientific journals, with the consequence of lacking the impact that others with enough funding can get. The science behind the IPCC is solid, and the impacts that we are facing as humanity are real, but we do need to acknowledge those issues so we can solve them and create a more just world for all in all aspects.
Speaker: Dr Ruth Cerezo-Mota graduated from UABC with a Master's degree in Physical Oceanography from CICESE and a PhD in Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Sciences from Oxford University. She is an IPCC lead author and has more than 15 years of experience working with regional climate models, for the study of extreme precipitation events and interannual variability of rainfall and temperature in Mexico. In September 2014 she joined the Laboratory of Engineering and Coastal Processes of the Institute of Engineering at UNAM as a CONACYT Chair and in 2018 as a researcher at UNAM.
