Early spring is a lively time of transition in Bavaria. On some days winter comes back for a while and dresses the early bloomers into an adorable white coat and in-between we got warm and sunny periods when flowers and trees start to sprout.

The first spring time activity we take here in the German countryside is to sew the tomatoes in March, so that they will carry ripe fruits in late summer. Some weeks after the tomato sewing several spring activities were possible. My dad told me that the first bear’s garlic is ready to harvest, so I climbed down to the river next to our house to go to the place where it grows. Bear’s garlic loves wet places in the shadow. When you harvest them, you should be extremely careful that you got the right plant. They can easily be mistaken by the very poisonous lily of the valley, because the leaves look so similar and you harvest them before they bloom. Consumed in huge amounts the lily of the valley is deadly for humans – ten leaves are probably enough – so please be careful guys! The difference on how you recognize that it’s bear’s garlic is the smell. It smells very garlicy and delicious when you cut it. Soon we will celebrate easter in the German countryside. Easter is always celebrated on the weekend after the first full moon in spring, so in my next video, I will show you our traditional Bavarian easter celebration. For now, my dad decorated our corkscrew hazel in the garden with colorful eggs. Lots of people do that all over Bavaria now and I think it is a gorgeous tradition. I associate it with the beginning of spring. I mean all the bolt colors are so spring like. In the evening it was time for our volunteer work at the lakeside nearby. Each spring we take part in the amphibian rescue and carry thousands of European toads over the street. We put them up at the amphibia fence and carry them onto the other side of the street to set them free in the lake, so they can spawn. On this evening my dad and I carried 430 toads and three frogs over the street – we always have to count them for the statistics. They start their travel to the lake usually in march, when it starts to get warmer and on very warm and humid days a lot of them would come to the fence. Last year we had over 1000 toads on one day! My family is divided for Fridays and other volunteers take care of the toads for the rest of the week. Each year I’m looking so much forward to the amphibian rescue, because I love toads, I think they are so cute and the little sounds they make are just adorable. I always feel good about this job. You can rescue thousands of animals of a protected species and you do some sports outdoors, as they usually walk for two to three hours after it got dark and believe me, you are very busy picking them up and carrying them around. Guys I hope you enjoyed my first springtime vlog from beautiful rural Bavaria. Have a beautiful time and see you next week.
