Spotify turned Car Thing into e-waste.
The $90 dashboard controller brought Spotify to vehicles without modern infotainment systems. It launched publicly in February 2022, but production ended just five months later.
Spotify initially promised existing devices would continue working. Instead, the company remotely disabled every Car Thing in December 2024, even though the screens, buttons, microphones, and electronics still functioned.
After backlash and a lawsuit, Spotify offered a limited refund process requiring proof of purchase before a deadline. Everyone else was advised to reset and dispose of the hardware.
