This is a âsponge-hat fluffy crabâ, and itâs been discovered in Western Australia!
The new species is actually called Lamarckdromia beagle, belonging to the Dromiidae family, commonly known as sponge crabs.
The crustaceans in this family are pretty handy with their claws, trimming sea sponges and ascidians â animals including sea squirts - down to size to wear them as hats.
The âhatsâ continue to grow, moulding to the shape of the crabâs back, but will never attach. It just snuggly sits atop the crabâs crown.
The hats arenât just a fuzzy accessory though. They help the crabs camouflage and avoid predators like octopuses.
They can also provide a chemical deterrent as some of the compounds the sponges produce are very noxious.
Itâs not clear why this species is so damn fluffy though. The hair doesnât help with holding their hats down, but their extra fluffy legs may make their outlines more obscured.
