On September 21, 1926, inventor Anatol Josepho opened the first photobooth studio on Broadway in New York City. One hundred years later, ICP is marking the anniversary with a special New York screening of "Spirit of the Photobooth," a new documentary exploring the history of the photobooth and the resurgence of classic analog booths around the world.
Filmed across Australia, Europe, South Korea, and the United States, "Spirit of the Photobooth" traces the photobooth’s social and cultural history, from Josepho’s invention and the democratization of portraiture to its role in the work of the Surrealists and Andy Warhol, and its renewed popularity today.
Following the screening, director Sam Anthony will join Sharon Josepho, granddaughter of Anatol Josepho, Bre Conley Saxon, founder of AUTOPHOTO, and photobooth operator and owner Danielle Krasniqi for a Q&A led by ICP Creative Director David Campany.
