In this Spindle Spotlight I am demonstrating what Bette Hochberg calls a one piece carved spindle, or a Victorian silk spindle. This lightweight tool is great for spinning silk thread. Because it has a slow short spin this type of spindle works well with fibers that are inherently strong or have a long staple length.

Spindle Style Pros:
one piece
lightweight
small/portable
some can be spun suspended or supported
some can be spun either top whorl style or bottom whorl style
spins thread weight easily

Spindle Style Cons:
lightweight
slow spin time
difficult to find for purchase
more challenging to learn the spin and draft technique
does not favor all types of fiber (definitely more suited toward silk)
