For our Directing the Invisible Art series we sat down with director Spike Jonze, who worked with the Framestore team on Where the Wild Things Are. We asked him what he looks for in an animated performance, and why the film’s animators were an essential part of the creative process.

“What I'm looking for is the same thing I'm looking for in any part of filmmaking, whether it's the sound, the music, the photography, the actor’s performance. I'm looking for something that moves me.

“So with animation, it’s the same as everything else: does it give me that feeling?”
