At long last, I've finally finished this cover! Shoutout to ren for nominating this one way back during the lightning rounds of COVER BATTLEGROUNDS III!
So, what I had thought was some weird timing/synchronization issue with the MIDI clock, was actually TOTALLY wrong... The reality was that this was in 9/8 time, and I had a hell of a time trying to groove with the beat! I mean, I CAN count it, but playing and counting 9/8 at the same time was a struggle for me for some reason. In a way, I almost felt like I regressed to the days of when I first picked up a guitar! Anyhow, this is why I had such a hard time trying to mesh with this track!
Truth be told, I was almost going to scrap this again and concede defeat finally. However, I was feeling particularly stubborn and decided instead to power on through with a rock n' roll attitude!
Unfortunately, I wound up having to change the bass and rhythm section quite a bit. To make up for this detour, I tried my best to keep the lead melodies faithful. Part of the reason that I needed to change the bass and rhythm sections was because they didn't quite allow me much room to make up new leads and noodle around.
I also fiddled around a lot more with note velocities for the drums. I usually just keep the velocities close to max, but this time there's a lot more variation.
To help back-up the lead guitar, I also threw in some synths into the mix. Specifically a layered combo of my Magical Chase "sparkle"-preset, and another synth. The synths are totally in a support role here, as I didn't want to detract from the guitar melodies/harmonies!
Also, 2:02 not sure where I suddenly pulled that one out from while noodling... Really made me think of it being like making my guitar "speak" with a bit of a southern drawl, or something. In any case, I particularly enjoyed doing that little bit!
Anyways, hope you all enjoy this cover! In the future, I really hope that I don't wind up having such a hard time with the other Space Manbow tunes (or any others for that matter)! ~DAR

Upon the first few times listening to this track, I immediately knew I wanted to have clean guitar parts added into it! First came handling the synths and slapping reverbs and whatnot onto my string sections though. Speaking of synths, that synth was a preset I came up with completely from scratch! I had thrown together this Low Hum Pad while experimenting with the Helm synthesizer while I was working on my original Get Gored. Pretty happy that I got to use a new sound in something so quickly!
Anyhow, after getting all the other instruments set into their places for the cover, it was time to noodle around on the guitar! In order to get that brighter and bell-like tone, I chose to go full Stratocaster for this one (something that has really been a rarity over the last few years!). I really enjoyed recording the guitars on this. I just felt so relaxed, and I actually sat back a few times to close my eyes and just keep playing the new guitar bits over a loop. It really is nice being able to work on slower, soothing songs like this!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! Also, my apologies that this took me a while to get out. I actually wound up getting myself caught up in a long nostalgia-driven trip down memory lane while going through the Dragon Ball Z soundtrack. Im feeling really confident about the upcoming Dragon Ball Z cover, so I also hope that you all look forward to hearing it! ~DAR

What an absolutely breathtaking and beautiful song! I just HAD to do cover this as soon as I heard about it. Paired up with an equally beautiful and gorgeously green (or jade, rather) map!
Shoutout to Nuru for bringing this track and WAD to my attention! I have a soft spot for really pretty tracks and if I hear them at the right time, Ill impulsively decide to try my hand at covering it!
I wish I hadnt forgotten to write up my thoughts shortly after I finished recording and mixing this a couple months back.
I wound up staying very close to the original though, and had a lot of fun playing around with my synths and layering them. This song just has such a beautiful texture to it, even in its MIDI form! Which made it an absolute joy to produce for here.
I diiiid wind up adding some guitars though. Nothing crazy though, I didnt want the guitars to take away from anything. Just some simple power chords to dogpile on to the synth layer stack going on! Really satisfying to me when they first hit.
Also, as soon as I heard the square-lead part, I KNEW I had to do it on lead guitar! I didnt want to do all of it on the guitar though, as I really liked the feel and vibe that the synth had. When that lead synth hits for the first time, its just simply magical! Then for the final section of that part, thats what I decided to do on guitar. I also threw in some whammy bar action for some tasty detuning on some of those sustained notes!
Also if I remember right, I think I wound up using some of my mixer track setup for how I was planning on doing things for the DREAM album. Hell, if anything, covering this song is going to be a MASSIVE influence on how Im going to approach that album whenever I have the time to get back to it!

A tale of one young mans harrowing journey and first deployment as a UAC Space Marine. War is Hell, even more so when the enemy is Hell itself...
Well this work has certainly been a journey! Hello all, Im very proud to say that in spite of everything that happened at the start of the year, this Doom short-film has risen from the ashes!
Just as I mentioned in this uploads previous iteration, I want to give a shoutout to Gaia74, as it was his request during the Subscriber Appreciation Event 2021 that wound up leading to this short-film/music-video! Also special thanks goes out to Vilison for drawing up the artwork based off the original thumbnail!
Also, I cant forget to also thank the talented spriters and modders in the Doom community. Without their wonderful work, we wouldnt have this video!

Now, its time to dig into this behemoth of a song!
The Eternal Sky now stands as my longest original song yet! I was pretty nervous about whether I could pull off composing a song to fit this video. To my surprise though, things went rather smoothly!
With Sky being in the name, it seemed only natural that I include the motif from my song Sky. Sky has had a long history, dating back to my RISEN album (which is getting remade after this posts!). From there, its seen a few revisits and variants, such as Heofones Mist on HORIZONS and Taking Flight from On Impulse.
Just to tickle my own nostalgia, I wound up even using the same synth-piano as I had used on the original Sky from back in 2014! Never thought Id go back to it, as I felt it sounded kind of dated compared to my usual pianos. However, I think it worked pretty nicely here!
Recording and riffing around on the guitar was a blast! That double-tapping at the end was intense, I wound up getting a blister from it!
As for bass, I had gotten halfway through recording it when I decided to scrap it. I just didnt quite like the tone I was getting. So instead I opted for a synth-bass, it just felt like it had the right texture to it.
I also really enjoyed coming up with the strings and the electric piano parts.
Speaking of piano, I hope you all got a grin out of my little nod/parody to E1M1s motif at 9:37. I just couldnt resist throwing it in there, especially considering the scene, with the Doom Slayer teleporting in and all. Then I follow that up with a bit from my song Requies from my Red Planet II album, and then I bring the Sky motif back in. Boy, I tell ya, I wouldve never imagined mashing together Requies and Sky like that.
Also, mix-wise, I decided to try something different. For my double-tracked rhythm-guitars, I decided to make the left-side more prominent, and kept the leads aimed to the right, since thats what I had done when making the MIDI.
Theres a lot that I love from this track, but Id probably write a novellas worth going over everything! So Ill end it here.
I hope you all are as happy as I am to see this short-film make its return! I also hope this new DAR-original tune got all you guys headbangin out there! m/ ~DAR

Time for some good ol heavy metal m/!
Surprisingly, I actually had a little bit of a hard time recording this one. I wound up having to rely on the MIDI/VSTi bass running through my usual signal-chain (with some tweaks), since I just could not get a good take on my bass. The takes were just too sloppy-sounding, and more importantly, the tone just did not gel well with the mix either. Gave it a shot though at least!
Fortunately things fared better on the rhythm and lead guitars! Though, I feel that my fast leads are a bit sloppy at times. However, in the context of the full mix, with the right amount of blend from the reverb & delay sends/aux channels, it sounds nice. That said though, the leads may not be 1-to-1 with the original MIDI. But I still jammed out to it just fine while recording the gameplay footage, so it ought to be alright!
Despite having a tricky time with this one, I actually got it done fairly quickly. I wouldve had this out like a few days sooner, but I had some particularly stormy weather blowing over. After one too many interruptions from brown-outs over the years, I always just wait things out. Such is the way of things while trying to record during stormy season... that and apparently the power transformer either blew up or got damaged, so that was another day of waiting while the electric company got that replaced.

Originally I was planning on covering FF8s Dont Be Afraid, however I decided to consult the Covers To-Do List once more. I was then VERY close to settling on Maybe Im a Lion until I received a nice handful of suggestions from ren. I went and listened through all the new suggestions several times and still hadnt yet made up my mind. Eventually, one day whilst I was listening to them all again, as soon as I heard Eruyt Villages theme, I was like This one, this is the one!. All my other FF covers so far have been heavy and more aggressive, so I figured that this might be a nice one to mix things up a little. That, and plus I was really feeling in the mood for something soothing and mellow.
So pretty jazzy huh? I actually didnt intend for this to become this jazzy-sounding sort of thing... actually, Im not sure what to really call it, its jazz-like but at the same time not what Id really call real jazz. I was stuck for a bit on this one, since I wasnt sure how to approach it. I was going to try and stay super faithful to the original instrumentation, with just the addition of my acoustic guitar. However, recording the acoustic has its complications...
By the way, my apologies for the hiss/background-noise in the acoustic parts. Im hoping to save up and finally buy a proper audio interface in the future (provided that the world and economy dont both implode next year!).
Anyhow, due to the noise, I always have to try and compensate for it by adding other elements to hopefully cover it up. So after recording and mixing the acoustic guitar tracks, I went and pulled out my Stratocaster. After recording some parts from the Strat, I subtly layered them on top of the acoustic parts. At this point, I was goofing around with chorus and even phaser and flanger! I then had the idea to play that chord you hear at the start and end of this cover. I thought it sounded really cool with the effects that I had set up. So I wound up adding these trippy-sounding strums throughout the rest of the track too. I also had some of the strums reversed, since I thought that sounded cool too.
So now, I was trying to decide on which flute sample I wanted to use to play the original flute part. However, nothing really sounded right, all of my flute samples just felt a bit too much... I felt like things were just so soothing-sounding that I needed to go a step further beyond the gentle flute. What could be smoother and more soothing than the flute?... The humble saxophone! At least thats what popped into my head at that particular moment in time. As soon as I loaded up my favorite saxophone, I fell in love with the sound. This is also when I decided Ah, the hell with it, Im just going to get jazzy and do my own thing with this.. Plus, I figured itd be great to have Mr. Bones on the saxophone again in a cover (the last time being in that Duke3D cover). Also, I had WAY too much fun cobbling together that Black Mage Bones sprite!
I also had fun making up the bass parts and playing them. In terms of playing and listening, this is probably one of my most laid-back sounding covers. However, behind the scenes, I had a whole lot going on. Layering and panning around several different instruments, and loads of reverb and other effects here and there.
Anyways, I dont want to ramble on forever, so the wall-of-text ends here. I really enjoyed putting together this surprisingly different (for me) cover, and I hope you all enjoy! ~DAR
**SIDENOTE: I actually have never played any of FF12. However, all I DO know about it was from what a good friend of mine told me many years ago about Eruyt Village and the Viera. To paraphrase it somewhat, Dude, DAR, just imagine! A village FULL of only *Bunny* girls!! ...𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯.

As always, many thanks also goes out to all of you whom participated in the previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS! Thanks to your votes, as well as Tifas surprise victory against Reimu during SlaughterMania I, this channel is graced once again with an opportunity to cover a Final Fantasy song!
Truth be told, I was pretty nervous about this one. As cool as that short bit from my FF7 Medley sounded, I had absolutely no idea how I would even begin to cover this song from start to finish! So, with only that little teaser as my guide and foundation, I set off to start recording and experimenting!
I figured Id just have everything kick off right from the start. After opening with the short bit from the medley, I started chugging away on the guitar, still unsure of where I would go with this. The only thing that I was sure of was that I really wanted to try my best at keeping that ominous and sinister atmosphere of the original. Wait... ominous AND sinister?... At that point, something happened, the DOOM switch in my brain flipped on. I knew exactly where I wanted to go with this now!
My nervousness and uncertainty from before was totally gone, and I was quickly laying down tracks for all the parts I needed. I tried to keep things pretty faithful to the original, however, I did change up some things.
One thing in particular that Im really happy about is how the new part during the chorus turned out! I made this new part sound more uplifting and heroic, which makes for a nice contrast to the rest of the cover (in my opinion). What really surprised me though is how the lead melody playing during that part is the same as the leads during the previous part (the Sephiroth! bit, you know the one). The reason I find that surprising is that by just changing up the progression and backing, it managed to convey a totally different atmosphere! In the first part of the chorus, the leads give this haunting feeling of dread and doom. Then in the new part, it manages to sound hopeful and triumphant!
Another thing Ive added to this is my own little interpretation of the breakdown bit from the Advent Children version of the song. I was almost going to cut this whole part out, I wasnt sure how well itd work in the cover thus far. In the end, I think it made for a nice bridge between the earlier parts and the final part of the cover. Now, Im totally aware that the guitar solo isnt at all accurate. At that point I just really wanted to jam and do my own thing. Also heres a fun fact: my solo was such a spur of the moment sort of thing, that I COULD NOT play it back properly after recording it. I could remember some of it, but for the most part I had forgotten how to play my own solo! Hopefully my fumbling through that part in the video isnt too obvious...
Anyways, I really had a blast putting this all together, hope you all enjoy the cover too! ~DAR
