Originally I was planning on covering FF8's "Don't Be Afraid", however I decided to consult the Covers To-Do List once more. I was then VERY close to settling on "Maybe I'm a Lion" until I received a nice handful of suggestions from ren. I went and listened through all the new suggestions several times and still hadn't yet made up my mind. Eventually, one day whilst I was listening to them all again, as soon as I heard Eruyt Village's theme, I was like "This one, this is the one!". All my other FF covers so far have been heavy and more aggressive, so I figured that this might be a nice one to mix things up a little. That, and plus I was really feeling in the mood for something soothing and mellow.
So pretty "jazzy" huh? I actually didn't intend for this to become this jazzy-sounding sort of thing... actually, I'm not sure what to really call it, its jazz-like but at the same time not what I'd really call real jazz. I was stuck for a bit on this one, since I wasn't sure how to approach it. I was going to try and stay super faithful to the original instrumentation, with just the addition of my acoustic guitar. However, recording the acoustic has its complications...
By the way, my apologies for the hiss/background-noise in the acoustic parts. I'm hoping to save up and finally buy a proper audio interface in the future (provided that the world and economy don't both implode next year!).
Anyhow, due to the noise, I always have to try and compensate for it by adding other elements to hopefully cover it up. So after recording and mixing the acoustic guitar tracks, I went and pulled out my Stratocaster. After recording some parts from the Strat, I subtly layered them on top of the acoustic parts. At this point, I was goofing around with chorus and even phaser and flanger! I then had the idea to play that chord you hear at the start and end of this cover. I thought it sounded really cool with the effects that I had set up. So I wound up adding these trippy-sounding strums throughout the rest of the track too. I also had some of the strums reversed, since I thought that sounded cool too.
So now, I was trying to decide on which flute sample I wanted to use to play the original flute part. However, nothing really sounded right, all of my flute samples just felt a bit too much... I felt like things were just so soothing-sounding that I needed to go a step further beyond the gentle flute. What could be smoother and more soothing than the flute?... The humble saxophone! At least that's what popped into my head at that particular moment in time. As soon as I loaded up my favorite saxophone, I fell in love with the sound. This is also when I decided "Ah, the hell with it, I'm just going to get jazzy and do my own thing with this.". Plus, I figured it'd be great to have Mr. Bones on the saxophone again in a cover (the last time being in that Duke3D cover). Also, I had WAY too much fun cobbling together that "Black Mage Bones" sprite!
I also had fun making up the bass parts and playing them. In terms of playing and listening, this is probably one of my most laid-back sounding covers. However, behind the scenes, I had a whole lot going on. Layering and panning around several different instruments, and loads of reverb and other effects here and there.

As always, many thanks also goes out to all of you whom participated in the previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS! Thanks to your votes, as well as Tifas surprise victory against Reimu during SlaughterMania I, this channel is graced once again with an opportunity to cover a Final Fantasy song!
Truth be told, I was pretty nervous about this one. As cool as that short bit from my FF7 Medley sounded, I had absolutely no idea how I would even begin to cover this song from start to finish! So, with only that little teaser as my guide and foundation, I set off to start recording and experimenting!
I figured Id just have everything kick off right from the start. After opening with the short bit from the medley, I started chugging away on the guitar, still unsure of where I would go with this. The only thing that I was sure of was that I really wanted to try my best at keeping that ominous and sinister atmosphere of the original. Wait... ominous AND sinister?... At that point, something happened, the DOOM switch in my brain flipped on. I knew exactly where I wanted to go with this now!
My nervousness and uncertainty from before was totally gone, and I was quickly laying down tracks for all the parts I needed. I tried to keep things pretty faithful to the original, however, I did change up some things.
One thing in particular that Im really happy about is how the new part during the chorus turned out! I made this new part sound more uplifting and heroic, which makes for a nice contrast to the rest of the cover (in my opinion). What really surprised me though is how the lead melody playing during that part is the same as the leads during the previous part (the Sephiroth! bit, you know the one). The reason I find that surprising is that by just changing up the progression and backing, it managed to convey a totally different atmosphere! In the first part of the chorus, the leads give this haunting feeling of dread and doom. Then in the new part, it manages to sound hopeful and triumphant!
Another thing Ive added to this is my own little interpretation of the breakdown bit from the Advent Children version of the song. I was almost going to cut this whole part out, I wasnt sure how well itd work in the cover thus far. In the end, I think it made for a nice bridge between the earlier parts and the final part of the cover. Now, Im totally aware that the guitar solo isnt at all accurate. At that point I just really wanted to jam and do my own thing. Also heres a fun fact: my solo was such a spur of the moment sort of thing, that I COULD NOT play it back properly after recording it. I could remember some of it, but for the most part I had forgotten how to play my own solo! Hopefully my fumbling through that part in the video isnt too obvious...
Anyways, I really had a blast putting this all together, hope you all enjoy the cover too! ~DAR

Shoutout to both ren and Gunner Gorman for suggesting and nominating this particular song! Also my many thanks goes out to everyone whom voted for Undertale in COVER BATTLEGROUNDS VI! Undertale-Guys epic comeback during the last Slaughtermania was truly a sight to behold.
I was actually pretty nervous about this one, since I wasnt sure how I would approach this track. All I knew was that I definitely wanted to stay true to the mood of the original. There have been plenty of great rock/metal, orchestral, and electronic renditions made from this track, however none (that I know of) that try to combine all three elements.
I wanted to have heavy guitars, but I didnt want them sounding too dark or aggressive. I wanted to include some symphonies, choirs, and french horns in order to accentuate the very grand sort of feeling that this song has. I also wanted to have some synths thrown into the mix here as well.
With the guitars, its funny, I think this was one of the rare times where tuning to Drop A# wasnt too bad. I usually always worry about my strings flopping and flapping around like metal noodles when I tune that low. To my surprise, I had a great time chugging out the rhythm parts, and I especially enjoyed playing the leads!
As for the orchestral part, I specifically really enjoyed throwing in those french horns! One of my favorite parts was where I had some french horns kind of team up with the lead guitar for a brief moment at 0:33. I feel like the horns, string sections, and choir all helped bring out this grand and epic flavor for the cover! It almost sounds like some big battle scene out of an anime, or something.
Oh also, I decided to extend the intro a little bit. I threw in some timpani/kettle-drums and made a little choir bit to add to the dramatic atmosphere. I also had the intro play at a slightly slower tempo, this was done to help give the rest of the song a stronger impact when everything finally kicks in at 0:28.
As for synths, one that I particularly liked adding in was a synth that plays the original songs bass parts. This synth patch really added to and complimented the songs rhythm, in my opinion.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover, and I hope its been worth the long wait (2+ years?)! ~DAR

...Just one more song, a little cover to remind you when Im no wait a minute, thats not how that goes!
On a serious note though, man, this is such a somber and hauntingly beautiful song.
I have such a soft spot for tunes like this, I just cant help but feel compelled to cover them!
Ive been continuing my re-listening of Stainds catalog for the past month, and I had gotten around to listening to their self-titled album (from back in 2011) for the first time. Great album, and I recommend giving it a listen m/! This track had been the closer for that album.
As I listened to the song, I could hear strings and other little elements playing in my head. I also wanted to try and expand upon the potential for this push and pull sort of energy and pacing that this song has.
I start off with the clean guitar and the vocals, just like the original. However, when the chorus comes, I take that opportunity to elevate things by bringing in the cellos and double bass. I also automated a high pass filter on the piano. Having the brightness of the piano right at the start of the chorus didnt feel right, so I gradually brought it in instead.
Continuing in upping things, once I put a bit of rock in my voice for the The road is long part, I decide to continue elevating. I decide to bring in the violas and violins to sweeten things.
When the chorus ends, I pull things back, and have a couple of acoustics playing the lead from the original. One acoustic plays the original part, while the other one plays the same thing an octave lower (to get that fake 12-string sort of sound). Also layered in a kantele to add a little extra shimmer and brightness to the acoustics.
I let the cello keep going, while I eventually fade out the double bass. I wanted that to impart this lingering feeling of brooding from the chorus. Eventually I bring things back down to just clean guitars and vocals. However thats only for a brief moment, as I begin ramping things up with the strings once more.
I really loved how the strings turned out! It was tricky working on this, because I didnt want to go overboard with adding things. I also wanted to try recording my violin, but a solo violin like that just didnt have quite the right texture for this situation. I think I managed to strike a good balance in staying true to the original, but giving it that extra little oomph that tickles ya in the feels.
Anyhow, things build up and then you have the tension before the final chorus kicks in. Oh, also, another thing I did was add a half measure before the first chorus comes in. Then for the 2nd chorus, I gave things a whole measure before it kicked in. Rather than just flowing normally into the choruses like the original, I wanted to have that pause, and let the clean guitar part sustain for a tad bit longer. Made it feel more dramatic to me.
Now, the final chorus, man this was really fun, rocking out to this bit. I also got to come up with a bass part, and riffed a little on the rhythm guitar. I also came up with leads that sing along with the vocals. Then had the leads smoothly transition into the solo from the original. Also came up with and sang a backing harmony part too.
After the climax of the track here, we bring things back down and close out with just the clean guitars and vocals.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this surprise cover! I promise this time for real, that Im going to get the MIDIs for Cyclic Divide out SOON, and get back to the Plutonia marathon! Its just that this song was one of those tunes that I couldnt leave alone or get out of my head! ~DAR

Man, its a month too early to be getting this spooky!
I really love the creepy atmosphere in this one, especially those haunting celestas. I kept the song structure the same, and most other things for that matter. I just made some small changes to kinda boost that spooky factor in the song. The biggest change I did with this was cutting back on the percussion from the original. I decided to substitute and throw in some conga drums as well as some other miscellaneous percussion instruments that felt creepy. Also threw in the usual creepy wind effect that Im very fond of, as well as loads of flangers and reverbs on several tracks in the project.

So, I wound up taking A LOT of creative liberties here with this one (as the original was only an 8-second loop). Shoutout to 634x023336 for requesting this track in the Subscriber Appreciation Event, and for also pointing me towards this rather silly WAD (and its sequel!).
Going into this one, I really felt like some bendy, discordant-sounding notes would be fitting for this track. I just kind of went with my gut and played and made up stuff that felt right to me. Also, to break up the action a bit, I threw in that western/southern sounding part at 1:30.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy this entry to the channels 2021 Subscriber Appreciation Event! ~DAR

Been a long, long time since I got to parody the end-of-level screen (last time being since the DOOM 2 Marathon). This time around though, were 100% clear!
Quick trivia on the Time stats: So, of course weve got the length of this cover, and then underneath that is the total playtime of this marathon.
Now, for sound. With this one, I wanted to try and get things as close as I could. I played and covered this one really straight. The ambience is different of course, and I added more cymbal/piatti crashes, for dramatic effect. Also, for the first time ever, I used one of those orch. hit sounds (those like dramatic orchestral stabs/hits). Layered them under those crash cymbals to further add to the dramatic sound.
In theme of the whole epic orchestral/movie feel of this track, I just HAD to also throw in some choirs to give a little extra oomph alongside those heroic-sounding french horns.
I couldnt quite tell what the quiet synth-harp was doing over on the right, but I still tried to re-create it as best as I could.
I wound up layering quite a few things here, in particular there were lots of string layers. Speaking of strings, the spooky ambience bit was made from a free sample of some glissando strings. Ran that sucker through some effects and thought it sounded pretty cool. I also layered some very gentle and quiet synths underneath these strings. Used some EQ to roll off everything above 2khz or 3khz for those synths, and then ran it through some reverb to sit it further back in the mix.
A couple of other things that I can think of that I did differently: One thing being the snare drum. The original had a bit more going for it, but I couldnt quite replicate it. I wasnt all too happy with my usual choices for a snare sound, so I wound up eventually settling on what I used here. Now, not being able to quite replicate the rhythm of the original snare, I actually wound up just drumming it out on my keyboard... no not that keyboard, my computer keyboard. I hit the record button to start recording MIDI, and drummed things out like that.
The other thing that I did (which is really subtle), is I actually delayed a part by little bit. Its the part that hits at 0:42. In the original, that part begins a bit sooner, but I really wanted to dwell slightly longer on those sustaining strings.
Originally, I was going to double-track the guitars, however, I had to exercise a bit of restraint. In order to make room for elements occupying the right side of the stereo field, I only had the guitar on the left side (same as the original too).

With the FF7 video nearing completion, I figured I should throw together a video recapping where Ive been for the last couple of months.
Plus, I thought this would be a good way for me to get back into the swing of things!
The FF7 video should be done here sometime in the next few days. Its going to be a massive one, clocking in at slightly over 15 minutes! I managed to cram 11 songs together within those 15 minutes.

Once more, a cleanup crew of 4 UAC Marines heads in on a search & destroy mission, as well as to survey the carnage.
Slow, tense, methodical, and with lots of tactical nodding.
So, I was feeling in the mood to do a video like this again. Mainly because of how ambient and spooky this track was. I had gotten the audio done fairly quickly, and was already imagining yet another team of marines heading into the level.
I sort of extended things, mainly having the synth string sound come in during the 2nd half, rather right from the start.
Im also really happy that I got to use my beloved Sine - Spooky Deep synth patch that I made a ways back. I forget if Ive ever gotten to use it in a cover yet, I feel like I may have.
Ambience and spookiness was the goal here, so I threw in some crackles, just cause. Immediately, I started thinking to myself what is this, ASMR tingles or something?... and then, if I had a mirror in front of me, I wouldve seen the biggest, dumbest grin ever. I went and took my DAR ASMR Doom comic reading thing that I did last year, and loaded that in with some reverb, reversed it, and also added other effects. So, feel free to have a giggle now that you all know what those mysterious whispers are in the cover.
I actually kept the original general MIDI seashore sound, I just added some effects to it to fit the mix. Same with the agogo patch (heard 1:24). However, I changed out the first bit that the agogo had originally played. I threw in a woodblock, and screwed around with some resonant filters (which can be heard at 0:36).
Originally, I was going to go with all normal strings and tremolo strings for the 2nd half. However, it just didnt feel right. So for the higher strings, I threw on some resonant filters, and turned them into these synth-sounding, pad strings. Mainly since I felt like those high notes ringing out, without any modulation, felt a little grating. However, adding these resonant filters really gave it this spooky factor! It almost kind of makes me think of one the battlescape themes from the original XCOM.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy this spooky and ambient addition to the D64D2 soundtrack! Next ones gonna be the opposite, another thrashy and (albeit short) energetic tune! ~DAR

Such a chilling and haunting track for MAP30!
Taking on such atmospheric tracks like this always proves to be a bit tricky (but fun!). Very much all about getting textures youre happy with.
Case in point, I had to go hunting for a specific electric piano sound. I needed something with just the right vibe.
I also needed to figure out what to do about the music-box sound from the original. I didnt want to just use the music-box from the gzdoom or SC-55 soundfonts, but at the same time, my alternatives were all way too bright, or didnt mesh right with the rest of the tracks. After trying out a bunch of different sounds, I wound up settling on using some celestas. Rolled off some high-end on them, and even sent the track to an aux-channel that used heavy-distortion and other little effects. Its suuuuper subtle, but its layered very, very quietly underneath the main celestas.
Also happy to bust out my SineSpookyDeep synth patch for the first time in such a long while. Used it for the deep drone-notes here. I also layered a string bit with it to add some grit and further impact to it.
Another thing thats challenging with tracks like this is trying to figure out how much to add without taking away from the vibe and atmosphere. I think the added choirs and those glissando strings worked out fairly nicely! Very suspenseful and full of tension.
For fun, I went and sampled the crying baby sound from the PSXDoom soundfont. Ran it through some effects, pitch-shifted some duplicates and stuff for added spooky ambience during the middle section of the song.
Another little thing I added was a synth playing the same stuff as the electric pianos. Had a nice airy sort of quality to it that felt nice for the atmosphere.

Been really looking forward to this song, always really dug the vibe of this track!
I was in a more noodly mood this time around and decided to make a few changes and additions to the song.
Structure is mostly the same, aside from shortening the beginning by 2 measures, and the DAR-style extended outro/final-chorus.
I also slightly changed up the power-chord arpeggio part when the guitars first come in. I also decided to keep the guitars going, this time without palm muting. Initially, I hadnt planned on making up a lead part during this section. I wound up adding it after I had made the leads for the outro.
Speaking of which, I absolutely loved noodling around for the outro! Those last two measures from the original MIDI were awesome and I was vibing along with it!... but then it was only just 2 measures, and thus the MIDI restarts! So for this rendition, I knew I definitely had to find a way to extend that part.
Also, Im glad that I decided to throw in a little white-noise riser effect to lead into the solo. I usually reach for one of my cymbal samples and reverse them, but I was feeling a bit adventurous and ran some filtered white-noise through one of my flangers. I dont typically use risers like this since I usually associate them with EDM-type stuff, or [insert any movie-trailer from the past like 10 years]. But it worked out quite nicely here, if I do say so myself!
On the topic of feeling a little adventurous and experimental, I decided to roll back the gain on my amp quite a bit. Now, while I will do this for my rhythms at times, I usually always keep my leads nice and saturated/distorted. However, doing my leads with lower gain/drive just wound up really having the right kind of texture for the track. I definitely need to not shy away from rolling back the gain dial in the future.
However, I did bring the gain back up to my usual amount for one of the rhythm guitar recordings during the outro. I still had the lower-gain tracks playing, panned hard-left and hard-right. However, the 3rd rhythm recording was panned over about 25% to the left and really added a little extra oomph to the outros rhythm section!
Of course, even more oomph was added through the use of a synth and a simple choir part. The synth wound up playing the same thing as the string section. Then the choir part is just simply sustaining an F, and then quickly going up to a G every couple of measures. Subtle, simple, but definitely effective!
In the section leading up to the solo, I decided to throw in some french horns to add to the dramatic and hopeful tone of the song.
Lastly, I just added some tom drums during the outro for a little more impact. That, and I added a few more subtle ride cymbal parts in the sections preceding the solo.
At first, when I sat down to work on this one, I was pretty nervous that Id have a creative block. Most of the time when Im in work-mode I can hear the cover in my head when just listening to the original. Though, every once in a while, Im unable to hear the idea for the rendition in my head. Thankfully, everything just kinda fell into place through the course of recording and messing around!
