Space Center Houston is the official visitor center for the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (JSC) and a non-profit science museum. It opened to the public on October 16, 1992, to showcase the history and future of America’s human spaceflight programs. JSC, the center it supports, has been the operational hub for every American crewed mission since the 1965 Gemini IV flight, housing both the Mission Control Center and the Astronaut Corps. The museum features several significant, authentic artifacts, including the Apollo 17 Command Module (America)—the last flown module to return humans from the Moon—and a genuine Moon rock available for visitors to touch. The campus is home to the international landmark Independence Plaza, where the public can enter a full-scale space shuttle replica, Independence, mounted on the historic, original NASA 905 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. Furthermore, the facility offers the NASA Tram Tour, providing access to the Johnson Space Center grounds, including the Historic Mission Control Center and Rocket Park, which displays one of the world's three remaining complete Saturn V rockets.
