The Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary is a hidden 17.5-acre oasis of hardwood and pine forest tucked quietly away in West Houston. This sanctuary is more than just a hiking trail; it is a living piece of local history and the headquarters of the Houston Audubon Society. The land originally belonged to Edith Lotz Moore and her husband Jesse, who purchased the property in 1926 to escape the city. In 1932, they hand-built the historic log cabin that still stands on the site today, using loblolly pines harvested directly from their land and sandstone curbstones reclaimed from downtown Houston streets. Edith lived here until 1975, when she bequeathed her beloved woods to the Audubon Society to ensure they would remain preserved forever. Today, visitors can trek along the shaded banks of Rummel Creek, spotting over 200 species of birds—including resident Barred Owls, Pileated Woodpeckers, and Cooper's Hawks—making it one of the premier urban birdwatching destinations in Texas.
