Southwest Airlines has been making very aggressive expansion plans over the past month or so, with an announcement of service to a handful of new airports such as Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
Although they have been doing very well in Chicago for years (at Midway Airport), this is the first time ever for them to take on American and United at ORD. Some argue that they will do well, but…I’m not so sure about that.
With initial service being limited to 5 cities and 20 daily departures, Southwest Airlines will likely face extreme completion from both the hometown airlines and the already-established low cost carriers.
Is there anything left at ORD for Southwest to profit from? Only time will tell.
