In week 1 nonconference game, the Southfield BlueJays visited McCabe field to play the Detroit Chadsey Explorers. Southfield was coming off a 3-6 season in 1994 and Chadsey had a 7-3 record. In an early 6-6 ball game, the Explorers pulled away and won 35-6. Southfield would finish the season 0-9 and Chadsey finished 8-2. Southfield was led by three-year starting QB Harlem Morton (Hampton) and RB/LB Lydell Shepard. Chadsey was led by Dream Team LB Craig Gotcher (Louisville), Dream Team CB Reynaldo Hill (Michigan State), and all-city DB/RB Tony Jones (Central Michigan).
