The Southern cassowary's range is restricted to Far North Queensland. Surprisingly, these large birds blend in to their forest habitat as they feed on fallen fruits. There are many story's surrounding the danger of these birds and the best practice is to stay away from adults ( Normally Males as the Males raise the young ) with chicks. Should you be found in close proximity with a Cassowary, it can be wise to stay in cover, ideally behind a tree. Unfortunately, these magnificent birds are now quite uncommon possibly due to habitat loss and vehicle strike. I obtained this up close footage in Karanda Far North Queensland.
