This is my cover for Soundole's yearly Chill Out VGM contest! As a result, it's of course more of a chill cover than most of the ones I do. I'm really happy with the way this one turned out, as I think it's pretty different from some of my covers in a lot of ways, but still sounds like me in others.
This is a song I've had on my list to do for a while, and I even once suggested it as a song for 8-Bit Battleground, but it didn't win of course. Illusion of Gaia (also called Illusion of Time in Europe) was a game I played a bit as a kid, but never made it very far. I replayed it a couple years ago, and still never beat it, but it's a pretty cool action RPG not unlike the old school Zelda games. This song was one of the ones that always stood out to me just because it's a really peaceful town theme. It has a fairly typical "Canon in D" kind of chord progression, but the melody is super memorable and the final section with the maj7th chords is the section that really takes it over the top for me. I knew I wanted to include a couple of those token Triple B slide guitar sections, and I'm glad I did because it works great with this song.

Hey all, I finally have something to upload. Its short and not new exactly, but Im pretty happy with the way this one turned out. This is my first attempt at re-doing some of my oldest arrangements and improving on their sound. For this one, I re-recorded all my parts, added organ and a tiny bit of piano, and re did all my tones and drum sounds from scratch. I also mostly did the mix from a barebones state, aside from my bass tone utilizing FX sends and whatnot.
I think this sounds so much better guitar-tone wise, drum sound wise than the original version, and its a lot punchier too. The three main arrangements changes were that I added organ to complement the rhythm guitars, added piano to the tiny bass solo, and changed the super heavy part towards the end to be held notes instead of more staccato notes.
Ill make a post about this in more detail soon, but I joined a band at the beginning of September, and that has become my primary focus for the time being, while I get to know the bands existing material, do some recording with them, as well as help mix/master the album and learn the songs to eventually play live. This means there just wont be too many uploads for at least the rest of the year and early next year; by that point who even knows if Ill be doing any focusing on vgm arrangements, but for the time being most of my uploads will likely be remixes of my old arrangements. The hope is to do enough of them to make an album of them (most of the ones I want to do were never on streaming services, but a few of them were).
Let me know what you think of this one, and how it compares to the original! I think it really shows how far Ive come, particularly production and mix-wise.
