Koby’s original work 'The Master Sword Emerges’ won third prize in the Release the Image category of Guildhall Young Artists (GYA) composition competition, RELEASE 2026.

Koby, from Junior Guildhall, says: “I wrote a soundtrack for the first movement of Hans Richter’s visual piece: Rhythm 21. This mainly involved electronic sounds, mimicking shapes and images on-screen. When writing this, I drew inspiration from the sound design of Alva Noto; the AV installations by Ryoji Ikeda; and the processed saxophone improvisation from Anna Von Hausswolff’s live band. When writing the soundtrack, I attempted to assign shapes to sounds/effects, bringing them to the forefront of the soundscape to then gradually fade into the background. Over time, as the shapes grew more complex and multiple started to appear, I aimed to make the atmosphere build tension towards the middle section. At points, there were moments where sounds were expansive and harmonic or when the music seemed it had a certain pressure and percussiveness. Composing a soundtrack for Release the Image has been a remarkable and rewarding experience!”

The category judge for Release the Image was Barbara de Biasi, Deputy Head of Electronic & Produced Music & Lead Professor of Film Music at Guildhall School.
