Soundtheory Gullfoss is an intelligent EQ that clears space in a mix without you reaching for a single band of parametric. Here we take a mix that arrives boxed in at the top and bottom and open it up with Gullfoss in five minutes.
Gullfoss is a real-time spectral processor that decides, hundreds of times a second, which elements are masking each other and adjusts the frequency response to pull them apart. The five controls are simpler than they first look. Recover lifts the detail that is being buried. Tame pulls back whatever is dominating and crowding the mix. Bias tells Gullfoss which of those two to favour when it has to choose, and Brighten steers the overall tone lighter or darker. Boost reshapes the balance the way your ear expects as level changes, without altering perceived loudness. We also use the metering to confirm what each control is doing, and drag the frequency range limiters in so Tame and Recover only work where you want them.
The point of this video is speed without losing control. Gullfoss can do a lot on its own, but knowing which control to reach for first is what gets you a clean, open master in minutes rather than an afternoon. We show the order in which we work and why.
