There are many stories, about the Morse code signal, some of which are true and others untrue: facts and fiction. This video details the SOS message and aims to unravel the mysteries associated with the SOS signal, how it should be sent, how it came about and some of the history. We want to separate the facts from the fiction.
Initially introduced in 1905 and then ratified as the international standard for a distress signal for use from 1908, it was slow to catch on with the Titanic using both old and new distress messages when it sank in 1912.
The when sending the SOS signal, it should not be sent as three letters, S, then O and then S. Instead it is a signal consisting of three short, three long and three short transmissions. The signal was devices because it could not easily be confused with other procedural and other signals.
As a result, the letters SOS may often be seen with an over-line, i.e. a line above it to signify this.
Also it was not chosen to signify anything. Although it may be romantic to think it might stand for Save Our Ship or Save Our Souls, this is not the case.
