In this video, I’m comparing the Sony FX6 vs the new Sony FX5 to see where each camera actually makes sense for filmmakers, cinematographers and run-and-gun shooters.
The FX6 has been one of Sony’s most popular cinema cameras for years, and its electronic Variable ND system is still one of its biggest advantages. But the FX5 brings some serious firepower and, depending on your workflow, could easily be the more appealing camera.
I’ll break down the recording formats, X-OCN, autofocus, stabilization, ergonomics, ND solutions, battery system, codecs and overall usability of both cameras, while looking at where each one wins in real-world production.
The FX5 and FX6 are inherently going to compete with each other. They have overlapping capabilities, but they also have specific features that could be crucial depending on whether you shoot documentaries, commercial work, events, corporate productions or other fast-paced projects.
The FX6 is still an incredibly capable cinema camera, but the FX5 closes the gap in some very interesting ways.
