The current full-frame DSLMs from Canon and Sony have - for the time being - the best video autofocus in their segment. In this test, we filmed an interview with the Sony A7S III and the Canon EOS R6 in parallel at an open aperture f1.8. We wanted to find out whether the autofocus was stable and reliable enough to be relied on 100%.
Many people are familiar with such interview situations: The background is scattered or simply ugly and should be blurred out as best as possible, or the camera's headlight is too weak and you have already reached the maximum acceptable ISO:
Now you have to open the aperture - but this makes (manual) focusing with large sensor cameras much more challenging - especially for solo operators. If the interview partner is also one of the more back-and-forth moving individuals, focusing becomes a real challenge ... unless you can rely on a video autofocus that works reliably even when the aperture is completely open.
Here we asked Caro to move back and forth in her seat during the interview to see if the AF is good enough @ f1.8.
