After either going through the Tutorial of this game, or deciding to skip it, the Heroes segment of this game's Story Mode begins.

The overall opening of the game of this game is reused for the opening of the Heroes Story, except now subtitles are added. I decided to just skip past that. So you can just check or re-check for the opening, here:

Even so, to summarize one more time:
A special ring-shaped meteor had fallen from the shooting stars. It had landed in a massive facility, and caused a whole legion of robots to activate and go berserk.
The next morning, in the futuristic Monopole City, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles had picked up this same mysterious meteor and were now in the middle of some traffic on their way to Megalo Station in order to see if someone their can analyze more about this rock.
That's when those berserk robots found the trio and gave chase! They tried to outrun them, but they were too much to handle. The team ended up crashing through a wall and bailing from their ride, falling from a tall building.
At least Tails could fly, and Knuckles could glide, but what about Sonic...?
That's when the mysterious meteor he was holding activated! It's power gave Sonic the ability control the gravity of both himself and anything around him. He used this power to to fly and escape from the stubborn robots.
The overall story of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is about learning more of why these robots were after these stones, called the Arks of the Cosmos, and learn more of their gravity-bending powers.
Sonic and his friends may even run into some very familiar rivals along the way as they further improve their Extreme Gear skills through the use of these Arks.

When the Megalo Station race finally starts, it's framed as immediately taking place right after the initial opening, translated into a proper race where Sonic must outrun the berserk MeteorTech robots - the SCRs - by winning 1st Place in this race.
Use everything you had learned into the Tutorial to help you out in this race and future ones later through this Story Mode.
