In this video, I collect 100 rings in Aquatic Mine, in a time that's a world record as of this video's creation. This run was set in motion by a discovery I came across in the level, and the path I take for rings is almost certainly unlike any previous route used in this mission. There are some unusual tricks that are required to get this low:

UNDERWATER GLIDE - If you stand on some form of elevated ground while holding both A and B, and walk (not jump) off, after a while you'll break into a glide--and this even works while underwater. I use this to get to the 20 rings in the ghost room, without having to travel there and back at the horribly slow speed of swimming. Note that when diving from the Mystic Melody path, getting caught on the ledge below is normally a hindrance, but it's necessary if you want to underwater glide here.

UNDERWATER WALL GRAB - If you're up against a wall in a falling (not diving) position, you can grab walls even underwater. You can either hold B after walking off a ledge (as you would for underwater gliding), or you can press A+B to jump and eventually come back down (releasing A is optional at this point). I use this technique to grab a pile of wood, which sets up...

CEILING CLIP - After grabbing onto the wood pile, you can move around just as you would on a wall. In particular, you can climb up, and when you get to the top of the pile, Knuckles will go into the ledge grab animation. However, since the top of the wood is so close to the ceiling here, this animation actually pulls him up through the ceiling, and since the water level stops ever-so-slightly above the ceiling, the game considers it a resurfacing and you don't get pulled back down. Unless you're still holding B (which makes you dive back down within the confines of the tunnel), you're now free to roam around the outside of Aquatic Mine, and at glide speed to boot. Just hope you know your way around, as I do. Interestingly, the tunnel full of rings (culminating with the Air Necklace), which is described by some hint monitors as "the room which is always underwater", actually isn't. It's underwater when the water level is at 3, but amazingly, that isn't so when the water level is at 1! (As a matter of fact, this path would not actually save any time if that weren't the case.) Fun times.
