Stalker is a song about a stalker, surprise, but it's also a song about a pathological liar I was in a relationship with. He would pretend to be someone who takes initiative for the life he wants but underneath the surface that wasn't the case at all. This was someone who wanted to be saved and would manipulate to get me to save him. Yet he'd refute any advice I gave him and come up with excuses why that wasn't possible, which made clear he didn't really want his situation to improve.
This was one of many red flags I ignored. He'd tell me stories about his family and how people were against him that sounded so bad that I felt I had to help him. The stories would get progressively worse to where I was completely blinded to reality. The longer I stayed and the more I talked to others about it, the more I came to realize this person was actually lying and manipulating me. His stories wouldn't allign with actual situations or other people's version of the story on too many occasions.
This was someone stuck in a victim mentality, never taking responsibility for his life or actions, always putting the blame on others.
Once I realized the type of person he was, I broke up with him. Which led to several instances where he'd stare at me non stop, wait for me, follow me around at campus, appear anywhere on my social media, in my livestreams. Which scared me, cause I didn't know where he'd stop.
Luckily it taught me a few things:
- you can't help people that don't want to be helped
- it's not your job to save someone
- you should never push your own needs aside for someone else's
- if a relationship costs you more energy than it makes you happy, it's time to go
After some people hinted that his behavior might be caused by a mental condition, I decided to give it a place. Not sure I succeeded though. It's frustrating to see how many people - good people that are now in the same spot I was in - fall for the same lies I did.
