I'm not sure how true it is but I've heard tale that if you do this 3 times in front of a mirror, Paul Sellers will magically appear and beat you with a #4 Plane while Matt Estlea holds you down.

Seriously though sometimes with a long run of small bits, late at night so you can't use a jointer, this is a much more efficient way of getting those edges smooth.

Just mount the plane upside in your vice, and make sure it's tight enough to secure it but don't overtighten. While it's cast iron, with enough pressure you can actually crack and damage your plane even in a wooden vice!
