Can a person sense a disaster before it happens?
In 1967, British psychiatrist John Barker launched one of the strangest experiments in the history of psychology — the Premonitions Bureau, a system created to collect dreams, visions, and warnings about future disasters before the events themselves occurred.
It all began with the Aberfan disaster in 1966.
The day before the tragedy, ten-year-old Eryl Mai Jones told her mother about a strange dream: she went to school, but the school was no longer there because something black had come down over it.
The next morning, a massive coal waste tip collapsed onto Pantglas Junior School. A total of 144 people were killed, 116 of them children.
Eryl Mai was among them.
After the disaster, psychiatrist John Barker asked the public a simple question: had anyone had a premonition about Aberfan?
He received dozens of responses.
Dreams. Visions. Unexplained fear. Drawings. Warnings.
But Barker immediately recognized a major problem — all of these accounts had been recorded after the disaster.
Human memory can reshape details, and coincidences can easily appear prophetic in hindsight.
Then Barker had a far more ambitious idea:
