The Yakehashiri Lava Flow site of course is worth visiting even if you're not hiking. It's right near the trailhead here: goo.gl/maps/Cb3d8iw8zn3Giw4r8
In all there were 59 rocks and trees that were tagged with blue spray paint. Most were smiley faces and a few were arrows. I did contact the Hachimantai Mountaineering Association and they told me that they would contact me when they go to clean it off, so it looks like I'll be able to go with the clean-up crew, hopefully soon.
I did hear from 2 eye-witnesses that the white guy who did this was caught by the police at the trailhead. Apparently someone called the cops while he was still on his way down so they were waiting for him when he got back to the parking lot. Of course nothing was made public about the charges or penalties for what he did - don't know if he was arrested, fined, or what. Probably privacy laws will keep that from being made public. But at any rate it is resolved as far as the law is concerned, or will be shortly I would assume. It's not a mystery as to who did it, the police know... just the rest of us don't. Because this happened before tourism opened, it's gotta be someone working or studying in Japan. I wish I knew if it was a local or someone just passing through.
