High School Chemistry

This is a variation of an experiment on the Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry syllabus called Investigating the solubility of a solid in water at a specific temperature.

The solid used was potassium nitrate.

The temperature was measured as 42 C using an alcohol thermometer.

The investigation did not yield very accurate results.

We calculated the solubility of potassium nitrate to be approximately 45g/100g of water at 42 C, from the results obtained.

Wikipedia lists the solubility of potassium nitrate in water at 40 C to be 63.9g/100g water.

Nevertheless, a procedure was carried out that could be carried out in a single chemistry lesson at our school.

A discussion of errors and improvements could be used as a follow up activity.

Safety spectacles were worn throughout the experiment.
