Mass balance in chemical reactions

Lead (II) nitrate and potassium iodide solutions are placed in a conical flask on an electronic balance. The two solutions are not in contact.

A rubber bung is inserted into the mouth of the flask making a closed system and the mass on the balance recorded.

When the two solutions inside the flask are allowed to mix, a chemical reaction occurs.

The mass of the reacting system is recorded.

In a closed system such as the flask in this experiment, no matter can enter the flask and none escapes.

Students are asked if there is an overall mass change when a chemical reaction takes place in a closed system.
