According to a survey, 81% of people in the United States have the desire to write a book at some point in their lives. But most people don't really know the amount of time, effort and even money that goes into writing a book. I've written and published 3 books at this point, and I want to share some things I wish I'd known at the start with you and maybe get you to think twice about going down this path.
For one thing, you shouldn't be writing with the thought of making boatloads of money. Writing a book isn't some get rich quick scheme, and it needs to be taken seriously if you actually want to finish. You should also seriously consider hiring an editor for things like spelling, punctuation and grammar as well as to make sur ethe story flows and there aren't any inconsistencies. You can get by without hiring someone, if you have the patience and know-how to do your own editing, but since many people complain they don't have enough time to write, I doubt they are going to have the time to learn these essential skills.
Even if you get through the hurdles of writing, editing, designing a great cover, formatting and getting your book to print (or to becoming an eBook), you still have all your work ahead of you as you need to market it if you want anyone to read it. And if you tell me you don't care if anyone reads it, I'm going to call you out for either lying to yourself and me or not actually wanting to write anything. The amount of effort involved isn't some weekend project where you just happily stare at the result. If you truly don't care if anyone reads it, then don't even worry about publishing it. Just write something in a word doc and come back to it whenever you feel like reading your own work. Otherwise, you're just taking up space that others who do want to share their work could be occupying.
