Snapper Fishing at Sunrise | Tampa Bay – Ft. Capt. Mike Fields
There are few better ways to start the day than watching the sun rise over Tampa Bay with a livewell full of fresh bait and hungry mangrove snapper waiting below. In this episode of Captain's Corner, I team up with Capt. Mike Fields to break down one of our favorite summertime fisheries and show you exactly how we consistently catch mangrove snapper.
The day starts before sunrise as we head to the grass flats to throw the cast net for tiny fry bait, also known as juvenile pilchards. You'll see why these small baits are so effective, how we deal with a "Christmas tree" in the cast net, and a simple trick from Capt. Mike that makes removing gilled baits quick and easy. Those fresh gilled pilchards don't go to waste either—they make outstanding chum for firing up schools of snapper.
Once the livewell is loaded, we head to the structure where Capt. Mike shares his approach to locating fish, positioning the boat, chumming effectively, and catching quality mangrove snapper using live bait.
