Messy But Awesome Bait Catching Tricks! Summertime Tips!
When the water heats up and the bait spreads thin, one of the most effective ways to gather pilchards and other small finfish is by chumming with a blend of 45% Purina fish food. On the shallow flats of Tampa Bay, this technique shines.
We anchor in about 2–4 feet of water and begin chumming consistently, creating a slick with handfuls of the Purina mix. The key is patience — let the chum work until the bait starts to ball up near the surface. In the warmer months, smaller baits are often preferred by pressured or lethargic predators, and this method is ideal for catching them.
Once the bait is thick, we deploy a 10-foot, 1/4-inch mesh Droput cast net, perfect for smaller baits and reducing gill damage. With a clean throw over the school, the net sinks quickly and traps a healthy haul.
