South Metro Fire Rescue is the first fire agency in the Denver metro area to carry blood in the field.
Through a partnership with the AdventHealth Parker Foundation, SMFR paramedics now have packed red blood cells available with EMS supervisors to give to patients in hemorrhagic shock — from traumatic injuries to medical emergencies like GI bleeds or pregnancy complications.
Getting blood products within the first 30 minutes after injury or illness can dramatically increase survival. Only about 1% of EMS agencies nationwide provide this advanced care, and we’re proud to bring this lifesaving capability to our community.
